Russell Brand wins Best Live Stand-up Performer at the British Comedy Awards at the weekend.
And quite right too! But of course once again this has caused all the soap box morality merchants to stand up and complain... again! Apparently Andrew Sachs has also been quoted as being ‘angry’ saying to the Daily Telegraph- "I don't really understand why he won it after all those people complained” "It's not my style of comedy. I can't appreciate his 'magic' if magic it is. It doesn't get through to me as comic genius as such it is."It baffles me as to why he is so popular. There's no style or structure to his work."He speaks off the top of his head. It's hit or miss – miss for me I'm afraid. "It's sad to see that this is popular with the executives." That really says it all! He, like many others doesn’t get the point. It is the very fact that Brand isn’t scripted and is just naturally very whacky and funny that makes him a comic genius!!! Yes, we were all enchanted in the seventies by Andrew Sachs as Manuel-but a lot of that credit must go for the script & of course John Cleese along with the rest of the cast of Fawlty towers. Now I may be wrong, but I cannot recall Andrew Sachs being renowned for anything else. Strangely now of course he is once again in demand. Sounds to me that he should be thanking Brand and Ross for relaunching his career instead of bitching about his lack of style or structure!!!
