Mixing business with pleasure
by Alison Davey I had quite a chuckle when I came across the recent sorry tale of journalist (or perhaps ex journalist?) Adam Smith. Wanting to be ‘part of history’ at the election of the new US President, Mr Smith formally booked himself some annual leave from his job at the Birmingham Mail and took off for Miami, promising to cover the elections for his newspaper. What he hadn’t reckoned was that for him it would be a part of his history that he would probably rather forget! Having partied far too well and rather the worse for wear through alcohol, Adam Smith sat clutching his laptop and let rip to a passing Dutch reporter with a drunken rant about his inebriated state, laughing hysterically about his intention to ‘cut and paste’ his story from the BBC website and finally announcing his resignation and putting two fingers up to his current employers! Forgivable and forgettable maybe in most circumstances, but perhaps he did not realise that his ‘rant’ was being captured on video and even more humiliating that it was then posted on YouTube for the world and his bosses at the Birmingham mail to see! It has apparently already been viewed over 20,000 times... (320,000!) I bet he awoke the next morning with not just a stinking hangover but also a terrible sinking feeling! Mr Smith attempted some damage limitation with his own follow up posting on YouTube the next day, but it remains to be seen whether this attempt to mix business with pleasure actually costs him his job, or perhaps even his career! On a positive side, he has certainly gained more publicity than he might ever have hoped for with his local newspaper and could be the start of something more lucrative. Who knows?! What is certain here is the power and speed of the internet; seems like you can’t beat it so you might as well join it and make sure you are using it to your advantage!
