Digital Marketing ROCKS!
I've asked Google News to feed me with content on "digital marketing" as this seems to be the space we're in and I'd like to get noticed!

I try to read the first article, but clicking through I am greeted by a gatekeeper form which instantly makes me change direction. How arrogant of these online forums to assume we want to join in. I just want to read the article, not sign up for a lifetime of abuse!

The second click gets me to Adweek and a story that is spread over two pages. I reflect on the necessity for this, it's not a magazine, it's a web page, it can go on one page should it choose. But no, it's around 300 words per page... got it, they are running ads down the right and they want me to see more! They also want to sell more ads based on page impressions, so they double it by my clicking, even treble it!! I can handle this when on my main machine but I've got limited bandwidth on my mini machine and also limited patience...

I decided to add a comment on the website, they were triggered by the line below which pushed a few buttons, obviously written by an agency bod!

""Digital" is not a discipline or a profession the way brand marketing or direct marketing or public relations are."

I became involved in the Internet 10 years ago after a career spent in sales, selling other peoples stuff to generate profits.

The banks are tumbling around us because they were wined and dined by the PR people. Commissioned by the brand people to ensure the right noises were being made about the brand, the direct marketing people were sent off to run up an ad that would show their stuff to the people who could admire from afar but not touch. No real thought for actual revenue... more shareholder value!

All this positioning going on while the sales team were out actually selling stuff to wholesalers & retailers which was paying for all this dancing behind the scenes.

The beautiful thing about digital is that it is completely measureable. Like a salesman, it's only as good as its figures! It also has the chance to come up close and personal with a real life human and facilitate the sale through the online shopping cart. It can therefore justify its existence, unlike the other "profession" and will therefore be there long term when the others are remembered fondly over dinner in 2020, when we will all see sooooo clearly!!

It was good to read the chap's article and observations on a world that's changing and to reflect and realise my passion for my profession which is truly the next best thing to a real life sales person. Digital Marketing ROCKS!
